The United Nations Cant Spend Their Dollars In Afghanistan Due To Afghani Lack

Date: Feb 04, 2022, 12:55

A senior UN official said Thursday (February 3rd) that the institution has $ 135 million in a bank in Afghanistan, but cannot use it; Because the central bank has not been able to convert this amount of money into Afghanis.

Abdullah al-Dardari, head of the United Nations Development Program in Afghanistan, said the United Nations had taken millions of dollars to Afghanistan and deposited them in the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. According to him, the Central Bank of Afghanistan had made a clear promise that the money would be automatically converted into Afghanis.

"This has not happened," said the head of the United Nations Development Program in Afghanistan, who spoke at the Global Sanctions Summit, according to Reuters. Al-Dardari says the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) also has $ 30 million stuck in the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (AIB) and cannot be converted into Afghanis. According to him, the program of this institution cannot be implemented without Afghans.

The Taliban, known as the "Islamic Emirate", seized power on August 15 and then banned the use of the dollar and any other foreign currency in the country.

The decision was made to keep the Afghani stable against the dollar. At the same time, it was reported that the banks' dollar reserves were depleted.

The United Nations has repeatedly transferred millions of dollars in cash to Afghanistan. Lack of liquidity is a serious problem. Recently, after a rapid rise in the dollar, the Afghani has risen again.
